Folk Song Singing

Folk Song Singing

2011 | China | 103min | 1.85:1 | 24fps

In Ziyang County, southern Shaanxi Province, China, during their high school years, a young girl named Liu Xiaoyang falls in love with Feng Gang, a member of the local county opera troupe. Meanwhile, Zhang Xuefeng, who has returned from naval service, also develops feelings for Xiaoyang. Despite Zhang’s relentless pursuit, Xiaoyang firmly rejects him.Feng Gang, however, grows increasingly conflicted and emotionally distant, constrained by the expectations of his rural “cousin.” One day, Zhang Xuefeng deliberately gets Xiaoyang drunk, and the two end up sharing a bed. Enraged, Xiaoyang bites off Zhang’s tongue in a fit of anger. Yet even this extreme act does not deter Zhang’s determination. In the end, it is Feng Gang who is forced to leave Ziyang.

The film uses Ziyang folk music as its narrative backbone, with the timeless folk song Lang Zai Duimen Chang Shange (The Lad Sings Folk Songs Across the River) serving as the central theme. This musical thread underscores the younger generation’s deep attachment to the folk songs they grew up with, their hometown, and their dreams.
