Beijing-based journalist Kang Wen returns to his hometown to report on the crested ibis, only to become entangled in a farce that pits various interest groups against each other and forces old wounds to the surface. Through the lens of a returning native’s sober yet emotionally charged perspective, the film reveals the stark realities of contemporary rural China and the moral dilemmas facing its people. Behind the truths of everyday life lies a fierce conflict between survival and development in modern China: How should we confront pollution?
