The film is set in the 1930s and 1940s, depicting how international friends—doctors, journalists, writers, engineers, artists, and others from around the world—overcame immense difficulties to reach Yan’an and the anti-Japanese base areas during China’s arduous struggle for national independence and liberation. It tells the story of how they fought side by side with the Chinese people.
